What Goes Into Auto Transmission Maintenance?

Sep 20, 2023

You likely drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission, but you might be among those who drive vehicles with manual transmissions. Whether your vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission, it needs to be serviced to stay in good condition. Here's a closer look at common types of transmission services for your vehicle.

Changing the Transmission Fluid

We've seen that the most important and most commonly done service is changing the transmission fluid. According to Consumer Reports, auto transmission fluid should be changed from vehicle mileage of as little as 30,000 miles for manual transmission vehicles to 100,000 miles or more for automatic transmission vehicles. Transmission fluid loses viscosity over time and can collect small bits of metal from the gears and other transmission parts. Changing the fluid removes the bad fluid and replaces it with good, clean fluid.

Checking the Auto Transmission Fluid Level

Another maintenance service is checking the
auto transmission fluid level. It should remain consistent until a technician changes it, but a leak might cause the fluid level to go lower. If checking the fluid level shows it is low, the technician can more closely inspect the transmission for signs of fluid leakage and fix the cause.

Inspecting the Sump Pump

Transmissions have a sump pump located at the bottom that sends fluid up into the transmission to lubricate it. The sump pump might go bad over time and cause your transmission to overheat and eventually break down. Having the sump pump checked and replaced when needed will help to keep the transmission properly lubricated with fluid.

Replacing the Fluid Pan Gasket

The transmission pan is bolted to the bottom of the transmission. It needs a good seal to keep all the fluid inside and not let it leak out. A transmission maintenance service can inspect the gasket and look for signs of leakage from the pan. If problems are found, a new gasket could fix them.

Cleaning or Replacing the Filter

The transmission fluid flows through a filter that catches any metal shavings or other small bits that might collect in the fluid. If the filter becomes clogged or dirty, it will not work well enough to keep the transmission properly lubricated with fluid. Having it replaced with a new one will ensure good fluid filtration.

Keeping your vehicle's transmission system well-cared for is key to maintaining your vehicle. You should make sure to reach out to professionals for transmission services over addressing issues yourself.
